Review

"If you can't write your idea on the back of my business card, you don't have a clear idea".  David Belasco, Theatre Producer

Product Description

Go on, admit it: most of the business documents that cross your desk really test your patience. If you're brave enough, you'll skim through them in an attempt to capture the key points. More often than not, you'll find them or throw them into the bin.

That's because most business writing is long, complex and takes forever to get to the point. This is self-defeating as the available reading time is often only a few minutes or less.

In this book, you'll learn to:

  • Grab and sustain your reader's attention
  • Produce a user friendly layout
  • Draw attention to key passages
It's a fundamental set of techniques that you'll be able to apply to all kinds of business writing - letters, e-mails, reports, memos, websites, business plans, forms, sign boards and even graphs.

Read This! Will demolish many of the enduring myths that many of us hold dear about business writing - for example, that Times New Roman is the best font, that you must always start a letter with Thank you, or that a report must always have a conclusion at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practising what he preaches!, 14 Jun 2004
This book just sums up the beauty of clear business writing. It is so easy to read, re-read and dip into. The layout is excellent too. This is an often-forgotten aspect of good writing - people need to be attracted to your document in order to read it and get the message. Robert Gentle's book covers it all with good examples of 'before' and 'after' so you can see why what he suggests makes sense.

I recommend this book on the business writing training courses I run, and I have bought copies for our resource library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Constructive and Practcal help for Business Students, 11 Sep 2002
By stephen ginns (cambridge United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The author has a very readable style, and puts across some impoortant messages for Business students who often fall into the trap of "academic writing" that is inappropriate in a business context (and sometimes incomprehensible!). The book covers not only writing style, but also layout, fonts, readability, presentation of data, etc. It gives a wide range of examples of good and bad practice and lots of information on how to create a user-friendly layout.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really useful book, 24 Jan 2003
Excellent book that really helped me when starting up my business and continues to provide advice today. It offers solutions to practical letter writing, covering presentations to icky situations like chasing payment, with advice on legalities. Very worthwhile purchase.
