Product Description

Review

"If you are working for or with USA Inc., the authors’ detailed analysis of American corporate culture is an invaluable roadmap."

David Nelson, Producer, Sky News Business

For many people, Globalisation means Americanization, but successful economic development also needs cultural understanding and trust. This book will give you a real insight into how to build successful relationships with the wonderful folk from "God’s Own Country".

Sir Paul Judge, Chairman, British-North American Committee

The best thing in management is cross fertilization.

The best in cross fertilization is cultural integration.

The best in cultural integration is to combine American management good sense and simplicity with European flair.

This book not only helps you avoid misunderstandings, but more importantly makes you understand how this unique combination can work.

Philippe Bourguignon, Chief Executive, Club Med (former Chief Executive, Disneyland Paris)

"the book I wish I had written… the book I hope you will read!"

Ed Reilly, President, American Management Association

"…I am extremely impressed by the quality and the new enlightenments of Allyson and Lanie's book."

PY Gerbeau, Chief Executive of Xscape and former Chief Executive of the Millenium Dome"Two Americans give us the inside story of how to work with the apparently mystifying yanks and takes the time to cover the vast world between middle America and the coasts. For an American, it’s a fascinating insight into what you always thought was just a personal peculiarity and now realize is a cultural characteristic. For a non-American the book will clear up such mystifying behaviors as volume of speech, approach to deadlines, etiquette at a business lunch and proper business dress code. "    Brand Channel

"provides vital information... It not only illuminates why Americans think and operate as they do, it also provide clear guidelines on how to be effective in playing to these preferences and business practices so as to build more effective and profitable relationships" - Business Book Review, January 2006

CNN Business International, 22 May 2002

"...addresses the relationship beyond the purely functional work relationship. . . and learning that he who asks the questions is in control!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I had this book 10 years ago, 11 Aug 2003
I've been traveling to the US for most of my career, and really wish I'd read this at the beginning. Some of the tips about the American values, how they conduct business, negotiate, look at the world was so insightful. My favourite chapter is "Who's the Boss?" which described our American managing director perfectly... hats off to these two authors who have written a great, friendly and very usable reference book -- certain chapters are getting so worn I may need to buy another copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's helps to see how Americans are perceived, 22 Jul 2003
By Ed Turlington (North Carolina, United States) - See all my reviews
The book is a great collection of practical advice from two experienced authors. Unlike some business books, this one is written by people who understand both Americans and non-Americans that do business with them. As an American, I learned valuable information about how we are seen by others, especially Europeans. This knowledge will help in my international business and cultural interactions. I highly recommend the book for Americans and for those doing business with Americans--even those with years of this international experience will benefit from the book's insights.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential travel companion!, 22 Jan 2003
By Tim Last (United States) - See all my reviews
It's surprising how many of us interact regularly with Americans, but don't stop to ponder the differences in business culture until it's almost too late. In principle these differences are small, but have a very significant impact on the success of a relationship.

Co-authored by an American who's lived abroad long enough to have an unbaised view on the country of her birth, 'Working with Americans' provides a series of practical insights and helpful tips to ensure effective understanding, personal interactins, and results! It's a straightforward read, uncluttered by the conceptual abstractions that hinder some other books on this subject.

A valuable read for those who (intend to) work alongside colleagues or business partners from this 'youthful land of plenty,' delivered with the wit and wisdom of authors who demonstrate broad understanding of their own culture as seen from the outside. Interestingly, I've found the book is not misplaced amongst Americans themselves, who are curious to better understand how they are perceived on a worldwide basis.

A five star read.
