5.0 out of 5 stars Accessible but scholarly review of the English Reformation, 11 Nov 2001
By A Customer
A.G. Dickens outlines relio/political events in Tudor England against the background and development of religious thought at home and elsewhere in Europe. Medieval Catholic tradition is well painted together with an assessment of the continuing influence of devotio moderna, Christian humanism, Wycliffe and the Lollards and many other strands. Continental influences are covered, especially the thought of Luther, Zwingli and Calvin. However, as the title suggests, the emphasis is on the development of English thought and events and the legacy of Wolsey, Cromwell, Cranmer, Protector Somerset, and of course the Tudor monarchs themselves.
Dickens brings some clarity into the complexity of the English Reformation and this book is essential reading for understanding the origins of the Anglican church and the unique place that church continues to have in the world.
