Lord Selborne has to marry or forfeit his inheritance and he must marry someone who attends the wedding of a relative! The noose tightens round his neck when he realises that his cousin's wedding is to be a quiet family affaire, leaving him with very few choices.

But help is at hand in the name of providence - a chimney-sweep's daughter captures his interest as she sells kisses for good luck at his cousin's wedding.

Jemima Jewell is sorely tempted by Lord Selborne's proposal, knowing it's the only way to escape her brutal father's clutches.

The marriage which was to be a secret and in name only, starts to take a life of its own as circumstances, events and family skeletons are revealed...
