4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Regency Debut, 15 May 2001
By A Customer
This is a very good first novel from an author who shows a lot of promise.<p? Jamie is about as downtrodden as a heroine can get at the outset of this tale and faced with forced marriage to a nasty old lecher, she makes a bolt for freedom in boy's clothes. Richard Hardinge takes pity on the witless lad and takes him home to be an under-gardener.

The heroine, in particular, is a likable and rounded character; spunky rather than feisty. The hero and supporting cast are also attractive if not so well-rounded. The villains (there are a few) are a nasty bunch indeed. The story gathers speed to a resounding finale. The relationship and romance are deftly handled.

The author's inexperience does show at times but this is an excellent debut

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional regency, suspenseful,sexy,and sophisticated, 4 May 2001
By A Customer
Joanna Maitland is a real find and this is a gorgeous book. Jamie is a terrific heroine, as cool headed as she is strong minded. Hero Richard is an honourable man (gosh, integrity is sexy!) The historical detail is spot on. An ingenous plot twists and turns through pervading menace to a dramatic crisis that I, for one, did not see coming. Real page turner. Thoroughly rewarding read.
