(REAL NAME)
Miss Marlene Johanson is the daughter of late Mrs Marlene Johanson. 2 years ago Mrs Johanson died in a car accident, leaving one year old Paul, Marlene and lover Paolo Rossi. Marlene left her London life to take over her mother's herb garden which is also the family business and also to take care of Paul. Marlene is a millionaire in her own right. She's a financial wizard with her own company and has an international client base. Recently Paolo died after a massive heart attact. When he was taken ill, he made Marlene promise that she will take Paul to Italy on holiday for the next 5 years and also to investigate the running of the Rossi company as it was gradually losing its control. According to the will, she has inherited a percentage of the company, whilst Paul inherited a holiday villa in Italy. Paul has a step mother Contessa and half sister Catrina in Italy. They offered to buy Marlene and Paul's inheritance and below the market price at that. As Marlene refused they offer and they planned to protest against the will.

Rocco Andretti and his father Carlo are the friends of Rossi family. Carlo owns a law firm and Poalo's will was entrusted with them. Rocco first saw Marlene 2 years ago in a restuarant in London with Poalo. He mistook her for been Poalo's mistress.

One day Rocco and snobby Catrina turned up in the herb garden to persuade her to sell up her and Paul's inheritance. She could hear them speak in Italian and clearly understood what they were saying which they were unaware of. They thought she was her mother and they were insulting her at every turn. They were conspiracing towards her, including to make her out as a unfit mother and fight custody for Paul and via him gain his villa. Rocco and Catrina thought that she was a gold digger and a bimbo and had no chance winning in court. Marlene was fuming inside but gave nothing away and wanted to get even. She decided to masquerade as late Paolo's dumb mistress. When she came face to face with Rocco and Catrina, she could not believe his duplicity. He was been flirty, sounding helpful and insisted that they will pay a large sum for the assets, and he will deal with neccessary paper work and she never needs to go to Italy. Sparks flew between them and readers can tell they were attracted to one another. Rocco wanted to bed her. She dismissed his so called helpfullness and decided a trip to Italy with Paul. She made 2 promises to Paolo and she had every intention to fullfilling them.

After they landed to Italy, Rocco went to collect them and stuck to them like glue. He instisted that he remains with her and the Rossi's to act as an interpreter even though contessa, Carlo and Catrina could speak English. When they got to the villa, Contessa and Carlo also thought she did not speak Italian that they thought she was a fool to go there. Contessa also questioned her identity and having no alternative she had to explain. Carlo was not happy with Paolo's will and he was hostile towards her for not signing the papers. Marlene could not believe that Paolo trusted a two-faced Carlo as a dear friend.
All she had to do then was to continue act like a bimbo and discreetly find out who was trying to ruin the Rossi name and it's creditability. She planned to expose them during the company's board meeting. She also met up with a close friend of Paolo who is also a shareholder and was helping her to find the culprit or culprits. He seemed to know all her family secrets including that Paolo was her biological father.

Rocco and Marlene act upon their attraction and she even moved in with him and he was planning to propose to her.

Without Rocco by her side, during the board meeting, she revealed her findings. Rocco had to leave his villa urgently. And after the meeting, Contessa made shocking revelations concerning her marriage with Marlene's biological father. And the media made a coverage of the meeting and was asking her questions.

After she got back to Rocco's villa to rejoice her victory with him, he was hostile towards her and was accussing her of been a gold digger and trying to get at Paolo's fortune. Carlo managed to convince him that she is a money grabber. He did not allow her to explain herself and instead hauled her on a plane to UK.

Weeks later, Rocco came after her realising that he was unfair to her. He learnt the whole truth from Paolo's close friend and Carlo. He was digusted towards his father. He realised that Marlene and Paul are the only people who have Rossi gene in them and are entitled to their father's fortune. Marlene had every right to defend Rossi name and save her father's reputation.

I liked the main characters quite alot, particularly the heroine. I found them to be funny.

This is the first book I have read, written by Jacqueline Baird. I had no complaints over her story what so ever.
