Product Description

Product Description
This is the user's manual for PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) public-key cryptography software, freely available over the Internet, that has become the de facto standard for the encryption of electronic mail and data. PGP and its author Philip Zimmermann are the focus of national and international debates concerning this new powerful "envelope" that allows individuals the same privacy in communications as enjoyed by governments and large corporations. Because cryptography is considered a munition by the US government and is thus subject to the same export restrictions as tanks and submarines, the worldwide distribution of PGP over the Internet has raised a host of issues that are addressed in this book. In addition to technical details, it contains insights into the social engineering behind the software engineering and into the legal, ethical and political issues that have surrounded PGP since its initial release.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good short and concise introduction to PGP & cryptography, 1 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This book is good in that it explains the subject very well, but unfortunately being a bit out of date only covers PGP versions 2.6x and below. PGP is currently on version 6 at the time of writing, and a few things have changed - most notably .pgp extentions have changed to .skr and .pkr, and the PGP config file is now .cfg as opposed to .txt. The long and short of it is that I wouldn't like to read this book whilst trying to get PGP 5 or later working without knowing what I've just written above! Aside from that, it does what you expect it to do, and it's well written in plain English, but the fact remains that a great deal of what's written here comes with the PGP user guide when you get the program anyway. There's plenty of extra information in here though, like altering timestamps, languages etc, and I did come away feeling like I really understood the program and the subject of cryptography. But the fact that it's out of date, and doesn't go into stuff like some simple Perl scripts to call PGP automatically as part of a cgi program - which lets face it anyone who's installing in on a web server for web email will need to know - knocks this down to 4 stars, where with a few fairly simple enhancements it could easily be a 5.

4.0 out of 5 stars Told me what I needed to know., 6 Jun 1998
By A Customer
This book is written by the author and quite frankly is his way of paying himself back for his hard work. Bottom line is if this documentation came with the program, we wouldn't need to buy the book. The bulk of the useful stuff takes up one third of the book. The rest is historical crao that I cared less about. Anyway, thanks to the book, I could get PGP up and running on an MVS and NT server.
