Review

"This book is a terrific one-volume summary of the scientific, philosophical and theological issues." -- "Scientific American"

Product Description

The 1990s saw the arrival of a new player in the creation/evolution debate - the intelligent design creationism (IDC) movement, whose strategy is to act as "the wedge" to overturn Darwinism and scientific naturalism. This anthology of writings by prominent creationists and their critics focuses on what is novel about the new movement. It serves as a companion to Robert Pennock's "Tower of Babel", in which he criticizes the wedge movement, as well as other new varieties of creationism. The book contains articles previously published in specialized, hard-to-find journals, as well as new contributions. Each section contains introductory background information, articles by influential creationists and their critics, and in some cases responses by the creationists. The discussions cover IDC as a political movement, IDC's philosophical attack on evolution, the theological debate over the apparent conflict between evolution and the Bible, IDC's scientific claims, and philosopher Alvin Plantinga's critique of naturalism and evolution. The book concludes with Pennock's "Why Creationism Should Not Be Taught in the Public Schools."

4.0 out of 5 stars Thorough review of ID, 17 Jul 2003
This book is an excellent and a thorough review of creationism and the criticism of the evolutionary theory as well as the answers to the critiques. Despite the title, the book covers a lot of the Young Earth creationism as well and for which I am thankful. The contents cover various classics such as the "Panda's Thumb" argument of the late Stephen Gould as expected but a section of the book is devoted to the philosophical aspects of creationism and more importantly the philosophy of science which goes to the roots of the scientific methodology and answer more questions than it sets out to achieve. The book even covers relevant probability theory and therefore all in all encompasses information from as diverse fields of philosophy, theology, mathematics, paleontology etc. However on the negative side it is almost a tome by itself which makes the reading physically harder and one of the issues that is surprisingly lightly touched - or missed by me - is the creationist claim of moral high ground and lack of moral fibre in a world dominated by evolutionary theory and hence the 4 stars. All in all a book that includes papers from specialist publications that everyone involved or interested in the evolution/creation controversy should read in order to form an informed opinion.
