Product Description

Product Description

Provides an overview of what is known about the neural and hormonal bases of sex differences in behaviour, particularly differences in cognitive ability. The author argues that men and women differ not only in physical attributes and reproductive function but also in how they solve common problems. She offers evidence that the effects of sex hormones on brain organization occur so early in life that, from the start, the environment is acting on differently wired brains in girls and boys. She presents various behavioural, neurological and endocrinological studies that shed light on the processes giving rise to the sex differences in the brain.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book makes studying easy!, 4 Oct 2002
By A Customer
This book was my bible whilst studying for an exam! Kimura has a knack of "talking" to you as if on a one to one. So many undergraduate books are stuffy and difficult to read that I usually just read the chapters that are essential to get me a good grade in the exam. However, with this book I read every chapter as it is really clear and easy to understand.

The book examines the cognitive differences found between men and women. It begins with our evolutionary legacy and the differences that are formed during the human foetal stage. There are chapters examining the differences in male and female motor skills, spatial abilities, maths, perception and verbal abilities. There is also a brilliant chapter explaining how hormones affect these abilities in adults.

My favourite chapters were the chapter on how males and females become different whilst in the womb and the chapter on body asymmetry. You would not believe how much information is provided by your fingerprint!

I urge you to buy this book because you will find that it is so easy to read that you will be working without even realising it! Using ONLY the information in this book enabled my essay to obtain a First. I'm not boasting, just explaining how fantastic this book is - you will not be disappointed.
