Product Description
Synopsis
"Advances in Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining" brings together the latest research - in statistics, databases, machine learning, and artificial intelligence - that are part of the rapidly growing field of knowledge discovery and data mining. Topics covered include fundamental issues, classification and clustering, trend and deviation analysis, dependency modelling, integrated discovery systems, next generation database systems, and application case studies. The contributors include leading researchers and practitioners from academia, government laboratories, and private industry. The last decade has seen an explosive growth in the generation and collection of data. Advances in data collection, widespread use of bar codes for most commercial products, and the computerization of many business and government transactions have flooded us with data and generated an urgent need for new techniques and tools that can intelligently and automatically assist in transforming this data into useful knowledge. This book is a comprehensive overview of the new generation of techniques and tools for knowledge discovery in data.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the most established and referenced book on data mining around, 21 May 2006
By D. Berry "Alex Berry" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A rather low-level and technical entry to the fields of knowledge discovery and data mining. The authors set the bar high with this work and stimulated the field in the commercial world, let alone in the research arena.

It's structured as a collection of white papers and covers a broad spectrum of topics. A tad mathematical in part, which should only put you off if you have an extreme distaste for such.

Not only is it one of the most highly referenced books on the subject, it also references a significant number of resources. The contributors to this work were right on the ball; yet it lacks commercial impetus, which, given it's focus is no bad thing. Looking back, it's still a highly valuable addition to one's data mining and KDD collection and highly recommended as an all rounder.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book., 11 Dec 1997
By A Customer
I read a lot of papers from this book. And I read twice and twice a lot of them. This is a book to the professional and to the novice in data mining (d.m.). In it you take a general view from data mining and the particular one you pretend because you can see papers from "what is d.m.", "how to use d.m.", "d.m. techniques", "d.m. and visualization", "applications from d.m.", "d.m. tools", "advances in d.m.", "the future and d.m.".
