5.0 out of 5 stars A must-buy if you've read LotR more than twice!, 29 Jan 2002
This 4 book set takes you through the many iterations of the LotR trilogy, starting with 'Bingo Bolger-Baggins' - and at a time when Tolkien himself had no idea where the story would lead. It explores the origins of the ring's power, the black riders, the ents, and so on.
...it also gives excellent value for money. Be aware though, the 4th book is only part of 'Sauron Defeated' - the part relating to LotR - if you want the Notion Club Papers and Legend of Anadune, you'll have to buy that book separately.

5.0 out of 5 stars How did Tolkien do that?...Now you know!, 2 Jan 2001
By mphmusixman@yahoo.com (Syracuse New York) - See all my reviews
The most captivating story of all time, The Lord of the Rings, continues to gain in popularity.

The amount of written material produced by the author and released posthumously, edited by his son Christopher, is staggering.

These volumes give the reader an invitation into the private papers of the author. Everything there is to know is published here. How stories developed, alternate versions, notes, all wonderfully presented.

A must for fans of the Lord of the Rings, who have read the book(s)several times, and know its charecters and nuances (such as myself). For students of fiction or aspiring authors, this is an important "how-to" work.

By A Customer
Did you know that at first Strider A.K.A Aragorn was a Hobbit , or that the beloved Treebeard was at first an evil beeing , How about reading about the first meeting betwing Aragorn and Eowen ? the first time Tolkien thught of galadrial... and alot alot more . This are only some of the things in this books . If you love "Lord of the Rings" and wont to know how it came to be as it is you must read this books , and if you love "Lord of the rings" and like me ,after reading it wonted more , but , ther is no more , you will find a lot more here in this books . But don't expect a story like "Lord of the rings " as this books are acounts of Tolkiens work in progres , you will find short parts of stores or a story writen 3 times 'cos of the changes Tolkien wrot in all 3 vershens . All in All if you love Tolkiens works you will love this books. happy reading.

Collections of an author's work are often confusing, particularly when what the author has created is as complex as Tolkien's writings. Read more
