5.0 out of 5 stars The movies are good - but your imagination is better!, 31 Jul 2006
By Paul R. Norton "cutsey-cuddly" (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a pretty amazing collection. I've had them for years on cassette and they bear repeated listening and are a constant joy. The 13-part dramatization of 'The Lord of the Rings' is spectacular and features some great acting from the likes of Ian Holm, Peter Woodthorpe, Bill Nighey, and Michael Hordern as a splendid Gandalf. Unlike the movies you can let your own imagination soar with the help of fantastic music and special effects. The companion piece - 'The Hobbit' is more quirky, more fun and just as much a pleasure. Give your eyes a rest from all that CGA. You don't really need it, you know: Your mind can create these wonders with little or no effort.

Worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for everyone!, 10 Jun 2001
By A Customer
A story so engrossing that you won't be able to leave the books until you're axhausted and many 'one last chapter...'.

I read the complete set about 10 times and I'll sure read it again with the movies coming out soon.

Buy this, you won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars An epic to read again and again, 13 Nov 2001
By A Customer
The Lord of the Rings was the first book I read as a child and I still remember how it lead my imagination into a world of fantasy and legends. The book is long and it never fails to feed the reader's attention. With his descriptive style of writing, Tolkien manages to draw a map of 'Middle Earth' in the mind. He fills it with new and exciting beings and creatures and the age-old saga of the fight between good and evil grips the reader right to the very end.
When I heard that a movie had been made about this wonderful story I couldn't resist the opportunity to read it once again. I searched my bookshelves and found a tattered old copy of The Hobbit and at once started reading it to my wife. Together, we began to relive the fantasies we had both experienced as children. In anticipation of finishing The Hobbit we purchased the complete boxed set of this epic to read together and then to share with our children for many years to come. I would recommend everyone to read Tolkien's books whether borrowed from friends or from the library. However, after experiencing the timelessness of these classics I would expect that any reader would decide to buy a set for him or herself. Read it now :-)
