Product Description

Synopsis
An atlas of 51 maps charting the journey that Frodo and his companions undertake in J.R.R.Tolkien's epic work. Based on clear and detailed descriptions given in the text and on the original maps that appear in The Lord of the Rings, as well as Tolkien's own paintings and drawings of the landscape and features of Middle-earth, this book clearly shows Frodo's route, together with the paths taken by other principal characters. The two-colour maps provide enough detail to help the reader envisage the country through which the narrative moves, and each one also has extensive notes about the journey. Having loved the volumes of The Lord of the Rings since they first appeared, Barbara Strachey long wanted fuller and more detailed maps to go with them. Though not a professional cartographer or artist, she finally decided to create them herself. For nearly 20 years her efforts have provided readers of The Lord of the Rings with a new and more vivid idea of Middle-earth, and her book remains an essential companion to Tolkien's great masterpiece.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good companion to the Lord of the Rings, 3 Jun 1999
By A Customer
While being a great companion to LOTR it provides little else. It is perfect for looking at while re-reading LOTR and helps you to visualise the landscape far better. However it is nowhere near as good as the atlas of middle-earth (which is brilliant) for general maps. Overall, OK nothing special, but worth having if like me you enjoy reading LOTR over and over.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very useful, but not too visual..., 2 Nov 2004
This Atlas is clearly a thorough, great acheivement, and will give you a much deeper understanding of the character's journeys (from Frodo and Sam's path to Aragorn and co.), however I felt it to be quite dull.

Don't get me wrong, it is a very handy companion to read the books with, but it felt like there's something missing. It also doesn't show the paths of the Hobbits before, during and after the Battle in the Shire at the end, which I found annoying.

The maps are just as real maps would be, which is good, but I would prefer more colourful and detailed maps, but maybe that's just me being fussy.

Go buy it, but don't get your hopes up for something amazing. Average, not great.

5.0 out of 5 stars In a word-outstanding! A must for Tolkien fans., 19 Nov 1998
By A Customer
Barbara Strachey's careful attention to detail and her fine eye for artistic enhancement provide the reader with a visual feast. Ms. Strachey painstakingly lays out every step of the journey from Bag End to Mount Doom with some of the most beautifully drawn Middle Earth maps available. This book is a necessary addition to any Tolkien collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, but no masterpiece
Very much the sort of thing that anybody with an ounce of artistic talent and the patience to analyse the book blow-by-blow, but better works have since appeared. Read more
