Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
For those who have not read Tolkien's epic fantasy, or for those looking to replace a worn and battered copy, this three-volume The Lord of the Rings box set is a great place to start. Comprising the three novels that make up the Lord of the Rings sequence--The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King--the whole set is presented in matching matt black packaging with embossed runes and coloured rings. Of course, beneath the fancy covers lies a great epic story of good versus evil, perhaps one of the greatest stories ever told. Attractively presented--and at a great price--there really is no excuse not to have this in your collection. So go on, give it a try; once you've entered Tolkien's fantastic imagination, you'll find it hard to leave. --Jonathan Weir

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the films, 5 Feb 2003
By Andy (Glamorgan) - See all my reviews
The common misconception that once you've seen the films you don't need to read the books is absolute rubbish where The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is concerned. The Fellowship of the Ring for example could be made into several films. Many main characters were left out in the film and much of the detailed journeys of Gandalf and Frodo can only be found in the book.
If you want the full flavour of what the Lord of the Rings is all about then i suggest you by the books! The films are fantastic but the books are even better!

5.0 out of 5 stars A literary masterpeice, 15 Jan 2002
In fairness Lord of the Rings doesn't require much praise. It certainly doesn't require another lengthy review from a Amazon customer. However I feel that it would be good to address those people who have seen the film and now feel it's time to read the book.

The book is, and will always remain, a classic in the works of literature. The film has been well received and is indeed a welcome adaptation of the book. But the two cannot be compared. For those of you who have seen the film first, don't expect to receive the same Hollywood style action packed story in the book. If you expect this then you will find the book boring by comparion and it may be wise to avoid it. However if you wish to experience the story told in fantastic detail using some of the best English literature, then you will find the book a true reward and encourage you to read it.

Tolkien was known to have said that nothing he created could be captured in a film, it exists only in scrolls and imagination. I whole heartly agree with him.

Don't let the film cloud your judgement on a true classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it 8 times in 18 months, its gotta be good!, 5 Aug 2001
By angelat27a@aol.com (Sheffield, UK) - See all my reviews
I am 14yrs old and so far have read this book cover to cover eight times, and I have only had it for 18 months! This alone should be a clear indication of how truly excellent this book is.

It's difficult to define the story of The Lord Of The Rings. Initially it is the account of the hobbit Frodo Baggins's journey right into the heart of the land of Sauron, mighty enemy of Middle Earth, to destroy a powerful ring which, if retrieved by Sauron, would mean the end of life, the desecration of the land. However, so many tales are entwined with Frodo's journey that the book becomes almost real, the immense detail in which the events are described makes it almost impossible NOT to believe.

I believe that everyone should read this book. It's magical concoction of journey and battle, goblins, elves and powerful beings, coupled with its astonishing believeabilty (is that a word?) makes it completely unmissable.

Tolkien was a mastermind. Find out why for yourself. Read this book.
