4.0 out of 5 stars Berlioz on Beethoven, 28 April 2005
This book is really mkore a historical document. It is fascinating to read Berlioz' critique of Beethoven's symphonies. How very diffently we view them today, in the light of Urtext scores, and historical performance. This book gives remarkable insight into how Berlioz viewed Beethoven, and how he admired him so. It does go into some detail of harmony, chromaticism (pretty unheard of in the Classical period, of which school Beethoven is, not Romantic), modulations, remoteness of keys etc, some of which were recognisably very "forward" looking at the time even that Berlioz was writing. Beethoven was and remains our very greatest symphonic writer, and probably the greatest composer ever, and Berlioz stands alongside him in some respects. Any Beethoven lover will want to read this. It really is a gem of a book.
