5.0 out of 5 stars A Sweet and Dreamy Tale, 23 Feb 2009
By Mr. Bennett J. Dunn "Flaze" (Bristol, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
When I picked up 'Sorcerer's Son', I was not expecting anything of great value--it looked to be another mainstream adventure story, probably with a windswept warrior outcast by his father and other such devices.

In fact, the plot of the book is not so dissimilar from how I speculated it would be, but the WAY in which it is written is masterful. Eisenstein possesses a quite understated way of writing, quietly drawing you into the tale. Indeed, the story is almost a glorious fairy-tale in some ways: connecting you to the characters, but in an objective fashion; allowing you to draw such conclusions as you will.

There is no 'burning fury'; no 'overwhelming despair' from any character in response to the actions of the plot. Yes, there are tangible human emotions, but they are all the more sympathetic for being complex, meaningful HUMAN emotions. Of course some characters are obviously good, and others bad, yet the 'badness' is not the universal 'evil' as of so much fantasy but the semi-neurotic selfishness which is unmistakably human; and the 'goodness' that of a cheerful sheltered boy, loved and nurtured by his mother.

This book is not a sweeping high-fantasy epic, but a layered tale of a son trying to find his identity through finding his father; a lonely sorceress pining for her vanished lover; a paranoid sorcerer isolated through his own machinations; and the double-life of his love-smitten spirit slave, trying to guide the son in his search, but compelled to obey the sorcerer.

It's a sweet and sad tale of searching for truth, couched in the mysterious fantasy world of Eisenstein's imagination. I highly recommend it.

A most enjoyable read and well worth reading the sequel and her other fantasy books. The characters are believable and you soon care about the fate of the hero and his friends.
