'The Dragon In The Sword' is the 3rd novel in Moorcock's Eternal Champion trilogy, arriving a whole 17 years after publication of the first two books ('The Eternal Champion' & 'Phoenix in Obsidian'), and sadly falling rather short of the excellence of the previous two novels. Once again the Eternal Champion is called upon to battle the forces of Chaos, accompanied this time by that other Moorcock hero Ulrich von Bek. There are some nice fantasy ideas in this novel, such as the ocean-going ship-communities at the novels opening, a race of bear-people and even a jaunt to Nazi Germany, but sadly the plot is very uninvolving as everything just rolls along on it's predetermined path. The hero does little more throughout than follow instructions ("Go here, find this artefact, then meet this person, etc") which means there's a lack of any real drama, and the majority of the supporting cast are very shallow creations. For fans of Moorcocks other work this is worth reading just to see the end of Erekose's saga, and the creation of Elrics, but this is far from being Moorcocks best work.
