2.0 out of 5 stars We deserve better, 26 Jun 2004
By A Customer
I am an adult learner of Portuguese who bought this book for three reasons: attractive price, pocket size, a lot packed into it. I did not know at the time I was in for a surprise.

The book opens with a glossary of grammatical terms very similar to that of another book I had bought earlier on. In contrast with a generally good standard, some definitions are rather poor. For example, augmentative is defined as endings added to nouns to make them bigger or more important. This is rather simplistic, almost infantile.

More worrying is the poor command of grammatical categoris. The phrase 'a opiniao da Clara e a (opiniao) do Paulo' (Clara's opinion and that of Paul) is given as an example of the repetition of the definite article. This is incorrect, for the second 'a' is not the definite article but a pronoun (that/the one of).

Some examples contradict the grammatical rules given in the book. The example 'tu tens a minha mala: tu tem-la', you have my bag: you have it', does not match the rule that following verb forms ending in -m, n is added before the pronoun. It should be 'tem-na', not 'tem-la'.

I thought I had a good buy. Now I am wiser. We learners of Portuguese deserve better. I have gone back to Prista's grammar, still the best as a small book, a companion grammar. At least you can trust what it says.
