I have been learning Portuguese for about ten months and thought that this book would help me, but now I have some doubts. I am a bit disappointed and hope that others can benefit from my experience. I hope that what I am going to say is constructive criticism that will help others.

The book is divided into thematic sections which cover a lot of topics, but there are problems. The Portuguese translation for some topics may not be quite right. Describing People is translated as A Descricao de Pessoas. Should it not be Descrevendo Pessoas? Work and Jobs is translated as O Trabalho e as Profissoes. Should it not be Trabalho e Empregos? An Evening Out is translated as Os Divertimentos Nocturnos. Is this right?

Brazilian Portuguese variants are given for some words but not others. Media is translated as Os Medias. I am not sure this is right in European Portuguese; I also believe in Brazilian Portuguese it should be A Midia, but this word is not given. Other words are said to be only for European or Brazilian Portuguese, but it may not be so. The book says that the word Rapaz, Boy, is not used in Brazil, only in Portugal. I may be wrong but I am pretty sure that it is used in Brazil as well as in Portugal.

There are also some more critical mistakes. In this book you learn that Ser is To Be (temporary) and Estar is To Be (permanent). This is the opposite to what other books say, and my teacher too.

This book could be a very useful aid for learners of Portuguese, like me, but it needs a lot of revision work before it can really help. Perhaps we could have a revised edition.

I loved this book. It's an essential tool for any learner of portuguese, and the useful way in which the topics are arranged thematically provides the perfect aid when studying for topic-based exams. I couldn't have got through my GCSE without it, and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who is working towards a similar qualification.
