Product Description

Dirk Pitt doesn't go looking for adventure: it finds him easily enough. His chance witnessing of an airship disaster - which nearly kills him - and subsequent discovery of the gruesome fate of the crew sets in motion the most nail-biting chain of events of his career. The hijacking on a golf course of one of the world's most powerful leaders; an exotic but outrageous undercover operation in the Caribbean; the sinister intrigue of a secret power base on the moon ...Pitt's considerable resources and guile are about to be tested to the limit. But when he finds a trail leading towards a fabulous treasure hidden fathoms deep in the ocean, Pitt realises he is on to something very special indeed. For somewhere in the raging waters lies the legendary lost lady of El Dorado, the golden prize that had already lured thousands to their graves ... --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

1.0 out of 5 stars Probably the worst book ever written, 25 July 2007
This review is from: Cyclops (Paperback)
I read this book on holiday last year as it happened to be lying around in the cottage I was staying in. It's just a shame that you're not allowed to give 0 stars.

Seriously, this book is BAD. It's like a story told by a breathless five-year-old who's stayed up way past his bedtime after a day playing war with his friends. And whilst you might indulge a child telling such a story, every right-thinking person should be condemning it when it comes from an adult, not publishing it or buying it. It has the most preposterous plot I've ever come across (BUT WHAT ARE THE RUSSIANS UP TO???), suffers from literary (in the loosest possible sense of the word) Attention Deficit Disorder, and has a hero that not even Calvin at his most juvenile would invent. "My name is Pitt. Dirk Pitt. I'm a marine biologist. Who just happens to be a cross between Indiana Jones and James Bond after eating too much sugar."

It's laughably, abominably, amazingly bad. By buying and reading this book, you are sending out subliminal signals that say "I am a moron."

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF THE WORST, 16 Oct 2009
By F. Comiskey "TRASH ADDICT" (LARGS) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Cyclops (Paperback)
This is the first book that I completely fell in love with an author.

There's a good case for saying that this the most 'unbeleivable' piece of popular adventure writing that has ever been written.

Reviews dominated by plot exposition lack imagination, so let's just say that somewhere between two juxtoposed Cold War secrets is Our Hero, Dirk Pitt, who searches for someone who vanished, who, in turn, was looking for something priceless.

You never know what the hell is happening and what the hell will happen next, but if utter crap was high-art, Clive Cussler would be compared to Michaelangelo, and this would be his Sistine Chapel; I couldn't stop reading it and have bought everything he has done since.

There's a vast readership of people who discipline themselves to read "worthy" books to be taken seriously, and I am guilty of the same pretentious flaw, but if you want to immerse yourself in a world of mindless farcial thrills; Cussler's the daddy.
