Product Description

Product Description

Written in easy-to-understand language, this cookbook is the one source every photographer needs for the recipes for both common and rare photographic formulas. With the advent of easy chemistry pre-packaged for specific papers, much of the artistry, variety and flexibility has been taken out of photography. This book provides the keys to unlocking creativity through the mastery of the "ingredients" of photography-namely the chemicals used to develop, fix, stop and tone.

From the Publisher

The Darkroom Cookbook, 2nd Edition offers 170 photographic formulas, 20 of which are new to this edition, that cover film developing, paper developing, toners, stop baths, fixers, negative reductions, print reductions, negative intensifiers, paper intensifiers, and more.New information has been added on pyro developer, amidol developer, monobaths, pushing film, and low contrast development. Sections on safety and darkroom planning, as well as a listing of chemical suppliers, complete this book. The comb binding allows for easy darkroom use. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Darkroom Bible!, 10 Jul 2001
By katya89@yahoo.com (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Darkroom Cookbook (Paperback)
This book was our textbook when I was in art school in America when I took Photochemistry. There are tons of ideas and recipes to try as well as good information on how to do it. This as well as the other companion book, The Film Developing Cookbook (same authors) are the definitive guides in experimental developing. It'll teach you to have better control over your negatives and your prints. Hidden in this book are the recipes that all the great masters themselves have used to create their masterpieces. For example, there's Edward Weston's ABC Pyro formula. A must for true enthusiasts, if nothing else, as a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, straight forward. If you think you dont need this book, think again!, 30 May 2009
This review is from: The Darkroom Cookbook (Paperback)
This book is extrememly well written and easy to follow. I always thought I didn't need this book because it was probably just for people who are into messing around with raw chamicals. How wrong I was. It really adds a new dimension to your traditional monochrome photography when you understand what is in the various developers, how they work and the history behind them. It really is not complicated, and you definitely do not need to be a chemist. And, infact, neither do you have to be into mixing your own formulas to need this book (although you might start wanting to anyway) because its key objective is to address how different developers and chemicals are used to control and achieve the results you are after from your photography.

On top of this, it is now bang up to date having been revised in 2008 and therefore it takes into account film brands such as ADOX/Efke which have become more prolific in recent years, plus other current products and developments in the industry. Further to this there are contributions from other photographers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep this handy, 3 Jan 2009
This review is from: The Darkroom Cookbook (Paperback)
The best place to turn when the company you bought chemistry from goes belly-up. It also offers interesting alternatives to normal darkroom practice. I'm slowly adopting more and more of their brews over commercial products. This book, and the film developing companion title are insurance for the die-hard photographer.
