3.0 out of 5 stars A god complementary book but focus to much on the mathematic, 15 Dec 2000
In the intoduction can you read that the books is writts in order to fill the void of the mathematicall side of the acoustics. A lot of books that I have reed in this subject does not talk much about the maths involved, so the atuhors is absolutely rigth. But the atuhors also written that this book ligths the properties of sound that does not invalves mathematics. Unforteally this book focus to much on maths and forgetts to explain thing in words without the help of numbers. But if you are a determend student or simular this book is necessary to understand the areas where a deep understanding of maths is required. Particular when it commes to understand the speed of sound in different kinds of materiall, the book has a great explenation of Young's modulus and showes with a formula how the differencies in temperature applies on the speed of the sound wave in air. This book explains much better the properties of sound than for example Master Handbook of Acoustics by F. Alton Everest. But I miss a satesfactory disscusion about scales and temperaments and the darw backs of the equal tempered scale. But still I have to say as a student in this area that I strongely recommend this book as a complement to J,Backus the acoustical foundation of music.
