Reading and writing poetry is a powerful way of making sense of the world. This book is part of `The Elements of Poetry' series, for which the anthologist has sought out poems to explore ideas to do with the elements - Water, Air, Fire and Earth.

Poems About Earth includes an excitingly varied selection. Topics include rainforests, deserts, precious stones, earthquakes, and even plate tectonics. Some poems have a touch of humour - Eric Finney's Don't Tread on Worm, for example, and J Patrick Lewis's succinct How a Cave Will Behave. Others make us think deeply; in Digging Seamus Heaney links his own work as a writer to the labour on the land of his forebears. Where they dug with spades, he `digs' with his pen. The poems also differ in form: sonnets, free verse, shape poems, riddles and prayers are all represented here. The anthology is thoughtfully illustrated, including pictures of different landscapes.
