Product Description

Product Description

He was almost a rock star. But not quite. From his early days leading cult heroes the Doctors of Madness, through to an unexpected shift into acting, the world according to Richard "Kid" Strange has been anything but predictable. Doctor Strangelife is a fascinating first-hand glimpse into life at the hub of London's music scene during and beyond the Punk era. Witty and incisive, Strange recalls encounters with a bizarrely divergent list of celebrities, among them Malcolm McLaren, the Sex Pistols, John Cleese, Twiggy, Jonathan King, Richard Branson, Jack Nicholson, Darnien Hirst, Kim Basinger and Martin Scorcese. But these are no ordinary memoirs: brutally frank Doctor Strangelife is a no-holds-barred account of a life lived among London's creative movers and shakers.

About the Author

Richard Strange has been at the heart of Britain's music and arts scenes for over thirty years, first as a member of the Doctors of Madness, and later as the founder of the revolutionary Cabaret Futura. As well as knowing everyone worth knowing in the UK, in recent years he has played a butler on German television.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone interested in Pop Culture, 12 Jul 2002
Strange is perhaps the only figure alive who has traversed so many art, music and performance movements. He can really understand the complex interplay between the elements of glamour, trash, provocation and outrage within British culture of the last 30 years. For anyone interested in such a theme, this is the least academis but the most intelligent and entertaining analysis one could hope to read of a London milieu whose ramifications and rewards extend across the Western world.

5.0 out of 5 stars The "Godmother of Punk", 20 May 2002
By A Customer
It's hard to think of a fabulous party or gig in the past four decades this man didn't make. Self-effacing and sharply witty. A master story teller makes you feel like an intimate friend as he takes you on a fantastical backstage tour of London's throbbing, schizophrenic night lives. A must-read for rock wannabees.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lifting The Lid On Pop-Culture, 30 May 2002
By A Customer
This book is like taking an epic journey with a man driven by demons. So beautifully and sensitively written, it takes the reader through every aspect of Pop-Culture of the last thirty years. Beatlemania,Psychedelia, Punk, New Romantics, New Cabaret, Britart, The Theatre, "Batman" and "Gangs of New York", Strange has been involved in them all, to a lesser or greater degree.
But it is not just the socio-cultural stuff that makes this book a "Must-Have", it is simply one of the funniest books ever written too. Wanna know what Kim Basinger is REALLY like? Or The Sex Pistols? Or Princess Diana? Or what it's like to work with Martin Scorsese? It's ALL here! Buy it!
