Product Description

Product Description

Britain loves University Challenge. An ITV institution of the 1960s, when it was presented by Bamber Gascoigne the show even featured contestants who have gone on to become superstars in their own rights (such as Stephen Fry). Off air for almost ten years, University Challenge was brought back in 1994, with a new, equally distinctive presenter, Jeremy Paxman. In the show, two colleges or universities compete against each other by answering tough questions on subjects as diverse as anclent Greek mythology and rocket science. 'Your starter for ten...no conferring' is one of the most famous phrases in television. University Challenge Quiz Book gives the reader the rare opportunity to pit themselves against the real starters for ten and bonus questions that have featured throughout the programme's long history. Drawing on the immense archive of questions accumulated over the decades, University Challenge Quiz Book includes starter questions on subjects that range from the Tall Ships Race to women in politics, the history of space travel to contemporary children's fiction. Then move on to bonus questions where the reader will find three questions on New York Hotels, for example, or three on writers and food, or even three on surnames. Incredibly broad in it's range, the University Challenge Quiz Book is as challenging as the programme itself. A must for all fans of the show and quiz fiends alike.

4.0 out of 5 stars Your starter for ten . . ., 8 Mar 2004
This book contains a huge range of questions from the BBC show 'University Challenge'. Harder than the usual set of trivia book questions this is definitely a book for those hard-core quiz lovers out there. It can be quite disheartening to have no idea what some of the questions are even talking about but then it's great when you do know the answer! If you like quizzes and trivia and fancy a challenge (I defy those reading the final questions not to be glad you weren't asked them in front of a television crew!) then this is something for you. However, if your limit is the occasional episode of 'The Weakest Link' then you might (as I frequently did) become frustrated as the obtuseness of some of the questions. Still, as long as you're not being told to "Hurry up!" it can't be all bad!
