4.0 out of 5 stars A Superb Read, 22 May 2009
By jonathan walker seo (Cardiff, Wales, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: John Gregory: The Boss (Paperback)
This book gives a great insight into the life of a football manager at a team who is trying to compete with the elite.

The majority of it surrounds John Gregory's time in charge of Aston Villa, where he was responsible for transforming the squad and at times saw them rise to the top of the Premiership.

Without trying to give the entire story away, there are interesting chapters about his dealings with Paul Merson and Stan Collymore as well as tales of transfers which were so close to being completed!

A great purchase for Aston Villa fans, as well as football fans who'd like to know more of what football managers go through!

4.0 out of 5 stars A must for fans of footballing characters, 16 Jan 2002
This review is from: John Gregory: The Boss (Paperback)
In this book 'The Boss' John Gregory gives a very honest account of his first 2-and-a-half seasons with Aston Villa. This is by no means a dull time in the club's history with the Yorke, Bosnich and Collymore sagas featured along with sustained winning streaks, losing streaks and the first FA Cup Final since 1957. The style is fairly light and cheeky and maintains a good momentum. Gregory also shows an emotional maturity and self-awareness, a rarity in the football world.

Don't expect any dirt to be dished out on Doug Ellis, Gregory chooses his words understandably carefully about his chairman. Apart from that it is a marvellously, genuinely open book about 'The Boss' at Villa, his ambitions, his love of the club and the city, and of Bruce Springsteen's music (hence the title of 'the Boss' I guess).

Highly recommended for anyone who likes football and misses Brian Clough. A definite for any Villa fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 30 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: John Gregory: The Boss (Paperback)
This book reflects the man himself as it is open about many of the experiences and feelings he has had as The manager of Aston Villa football club. It deals with many issues inclubing the big money transfers and lack of them at Aston Villa football even if you are not an Aston Villa fan read this book as it may give insight into your teams manager. A must for football fans
