5.0 out of 5 stars An super book , bringing history to life for young children., 19 Jan 2001
By A Customer
As a teacher of 7 and 8 year olds it can be difficult to put over the enormous impact the second world war had on the 'home front' in Britain. This book does it brilliantly. Seen through the eyes of Freddy, a three year old child, it follows his life year by year through the war, bringing out all the anxieties and hardships suffered in a sensitive but often humourous way. The book appealed to girls and boys alike and the children in my class loved the book so much that it has prompted many of them to buy their own copy. We have used many of the issues raised as a starting point to find out more about life in Briatin during the war years.I thoroughly recommend this book as an excellent read for and to children both at home and at school as a part of a History or Literacy lesson (or dare I say, just for the sheer enjoyment of a jolly good story). It is a shame there aren't more books written in this way, bringing history to life for young children.
