5.0 out of 5 stars Black on Black Love, 17 Jan 2004
By A Customer
Violent crime including gang warfare and the use of firearms affects many communities, with a growing number of alarming incidents reported in the media. Churches often struggle to find appropriate ways to respond to these crises and the pastoral needs that arise from them. Robert Beckford attempts to provide some much needed theological tools for an understanding of the disaffection amongst urban youths. Offering a clear analysis of the cultural and political factors at work, he argues for an approach based on action-reflection to seek life-transforming responses. Accessibly written, this book is an essential reading for those seeking to resource themselves for urban work or ministry.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent book, 3 Aug 2005
By A Customer
God and Gangs is simply, yet informatively written. I suggest anyone interests in Afrikan issues and theology should read this. He analyses the church's ignorance and reluctance on urban issues as a hangover from colonialism which separated the public from private in diasporic communities. Good references if you want to delve deeper. He unlike some other books, suggests a realistic way forward and a re-interpretation of scripture.
