Product Description

Review

'This powerful book explores forgiving the unforgivable.'
--Star magazine

'This is a gripping, well-paced tale, compassionate without being mawkish. --Guardian

'It's a deceptively simple plot, but look closely and you'll realise the skill that's gone into the construction. Ends tie up - but not too tidily. Events have their own momentum and the plot never seems contorted to accommodate a situation. It's a book which will bear rereading.'
--The Bookbag

'The emotional fallout from the murder of a young boy 18 years ago is the subject of this perceptive debut, which should please Jodie Picoult fans.'
--Waterstones Books Quarterly

Product Description

Irene Stanley thought her world had come to an end when her 15-year-old son, Shep, was murdered in a robbery at their Oregon home. Daniel Robbin, who had spent his teenage years in and out of trouble, gave himself up to the police and was imprisoned in the State Penitentiary.

Now, eighteen years later, Robbin is placed on Death Row awaiting a date for his execution. Irene's husband, Nate, has demons from the past of his own which he needs to face, and Shep's sister, Bliss, quickly learns that she too has a part to play in the healing of her family shattered by the tragedy.

Irene, having reached the brink of suicide, comes to the realization that to survive she needs to overcome her grief and her hate for Robbin, and that she must face the secrets that she suspects surround Shep's murder. She turns full circle, defying both her family and the church, and finds that she is not only capable of forgiveness for the man who murdered her son, but also she comes to terms with understanding much more about events that happened that fateful afternoon back in Carlton. And perhaps the most painful realization of all, how little they as a family understood Shep.

'For anyone who has ever wondered how forgiveness is possible, even when the pain is overwhelming, wonder no more.

Resting Place takes you on a journey you won't soon forget'

Sister Helen Prejean author of Dead Man Walking

4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling study of grace and compassion, 25 Sep 2009

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
This book arrived at a time when I was swamped with other things and wasn't sure about taking time out to read something other than research. However after a couple of short sessions covering perhaps 50 pages of the story, I realised I had something special on my hands. The remainder of the book was read in one long evening where I eschewed television, family, and work commitments to find out what happened to the Stanley family. In a world dominated so often by anger and revenge, this is a refreshingly compassionate story of how a boy's murder tears his family apart, and how salvation is found through the most unexpected sources. The writing flows well and the author convincingly evokes times, places, and people. The characters are satisfyingly flawed and absolutely believable, and by book's end one feels they have been to hell and returned at peace - and it is the reader's privilege to share some of that journey with them.

4.0 out of 5 stars emotional, 3 Nov 2009
By Sian Louise (UNITED KINGDOM) - See all my reviews

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
This was very well written and quite an emotional read.
The character of Irene seemed very realistic to me, what she went through as the mother of Shep and how she fought alcoholism and fought to keep her life going. I also really enjoyed the character Bliss, a very strong woman, who knew what she wanted and helped her mum out any way she could.
Nate as a character annoyed me, especially when the truth of what happened came about. I find it hard to believe that in this day and age people would have a problem with their child being different (I dont want to give it away) altho I suppose in small towns prejudices' remain.
You can't help but like the character of Daniel as well, at first it seems weird and I had trouble understanding how she as Shep's mother could befriend his killer but when the truth comes about you actually feel sorry for him and wish that there could be another ending.
This was a really good book and it actually takes you through quite a few different emotions, I throughly enjoyed this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy but emotional read, 16 Oct 2009
By Mr. K. Cross "keithcelt2" (Wales) - See all my reviews

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
I thought that maybe this book would be hard going, given the subject matter: the murder of a 15 year old son; the struggle to come to terms with that, & how the mother, in particular, deals with it, hiding from her family her forgiveness & friendship with her son's killer; how this revelation tears the family apart & the jouney they take to understand their relationships with each other & get back to being a family unit. Heavy stuff indeed. But it is written with a simple honesty, using simple, everyday language contained within short paragraphs. It proved an easy but emotional read. I was prepared to feel burdened by the book's subject matter, but I felt uplifted instead. The characters are well written, fleshed out to become real, believable people, & it's heart-warming to see how ordinary folk deal with an extra-ordinary situation. It only took me three nights to read it, & I will probably pick it up again in a year or so to re-read it, so much did I enjoy it.
