Review

'A swift, compelling read. Thorough and scholarly without the faintest whiff of academic stuffiness, Stevie Simkin's study of Straw Dogs summons up the turmoil of the 1960s and 70s and illuminates the highly charged subject of sexual violence on film'
- Stephen Farber, Film Critic, The Hollywood Reporter

"fascinating stuff, written in a way that thankfully avoids too much media studies pomposity and instead takes a straightforward, very readable approach to the story. ... a fascinating account of the long and complex history of this difficult but brilliant film. If the remainder of the series are as impressively produced, then Controversies looks like being the essential book series of the year." - David Flint, strangethingsarehappening.com

"What first impresses about this book is its depth of research. There are lots of fascinating insights into production and revelations that make it a must for those interested in Peckinpah as a filmmaker. ... If you find Straw Dogs the film interesting, ... this comes highly recommended, and if you intend to go on to watch the remake, it's a must-read." - Jennie Kermode, eyeforfilm.co.uk

'Exceptionally well-written .... needs to be read by anyone interested in understanding Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs as a serious work of cinematic art.' - Garner Simmons, author of Peckinpah - A Portrait in Montage.

'Stevie Simkin, one of the Controversies series' co-editors (with Julian Petley), picks his way through this potential minefield with exceptional tact, skill and thoroughness...Anyone interested in teaching on the film, as Simkin has over many years (experience which has surely enriched his understanding of it), will find this monograph an invaluable resource and an instructive model of contextual and textual analysis.' - British Universities Film and Video Council

'Both books throw out so many insights and new ideas concerning these two examples of cinéma maudites that they are studies valuable both to cinéastes and students of the way in which popular culture works. This is proving to be a most valuable series.' - Crime Time, on Straw Dogs and A Clockwork Orange

It is rare to find what is essentially an academic book written in a style that is so readily accessible to the general reader.

The book documents with great care the production and reception of Peckinpah's `Straw Dogs', including an informative examination of a variety of cultural contexts. It considers the history of censorship surrounding the film - first in the cinema and then for home consumption on VHS and DVD; and the explores these debates about censorship with clarity and remarkable even-handedness. The book concludes with a section on `The Legacy of Straw Dogs'.

A vast amount of rigorous research clearly lies behind the writing of this book, but the scholarship is never ostentatious. The analyses of key moments in the film are detailed and insightful, and serve as very useful reference points informing wider debates about censorship.

I have long thought that genuinely good and insightful academic writing makes complex ideas accessible, while bad academic writing makes relatively simple ideas impenetrably difficult. `Straw Dogs (Controversies)' falls firmly in the former category.

The book is important in its own right, but it is an engaging read, and should be accessible to anyone with a serious interest in film.

First, I must declare a personal interest. Back in 2002, I was pleased to assist the UK distributors in their determined efforts to free "Straw Dogs" from the clutches of the British censors and release it on DVD. More recently, I was more than happy to give Stevie Simkin some help with his research for this book and I've been looking forward to reading it for some time.

Regarding the book, it's easy to review:

if you're at all interested in cinema, this book is essential reading.

Briefly, the first two sections of the book cover the film's creation and how it was a constant thorn in the side of the censors (especially in the UK, where it was refused a video release for 18 years). The remaining sections provide a comprehensive analysis of the film and it's themes, culminating in a detailed examination of one of the most infamous scenes in cinema history.

The book is, without doubt, the authoritative account of the film's background and history. Furthermore, however, through the analysis of the film's portrayal of human relationships, it also offers an insight into some of our deepest (and darkest) thoughts and feelings.

Dr. Stevie Simkin pulls together a tough, complex analysis of this films content and history with effortless charm and pace. An excellent book whether you're familiar with the film or not; this text provides great insight to not only theoretical debate but also behind the scenes anecdotes all of which provoke and intrigue. To accompany the quality of the authorship, this book is produced on high quality paper which truly enhances the images illustrating the analysis. Whether a student of film or simply someone with an interest this book is a bargain and worth every penny. I look forward to reading more books in this series.
