Product Description

Whistling Tor is a place of secrets, a mysterious, wooded hill housing the crumbling fortress of a chieftain whose name is spoken throughout the district in tones of revulsion and bitterness. A curse lies over Anluan’s family and his people; those woods hold a perilous force whose every whisper threatens doom.

For young scribe Caitrin it is a safe haven. This place where nobody else is prepared to go seems exactly what she needs, for Caitrin is fleeing her own demons. As Caitlin comes to know Anluan and his home in more depth she realizes that it is only through her love and determination that the curse can be broken and Anluan and his people set free.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart's Blood review, 7 Oct 2009
As a long-time fan of Juliet Marillier I found it difficult to begin this review without letting my inner fan girl get the better of me. I stumbled on The Daughter of the Forest when I was fourteen and fell in instant love with the author's work. Marillier has a knack of creating complex, sympathetic characters and compelling narratives whilst still retaining a degree of realism.
For anyone (like me) who was slightly disappointed with the author's previous work Heir to Sevenwaters, Heart's Blood will more than compensate. An unsettling atmosphere is successfully established and amidst the drama and romance there are some genuinely creepy moments. Eighteen year old craftswoman Caitrin, being both heroic and vulnerable, makes a worthy addition to Marillier's growing list of strong female protagonists and the romance she ultimately shares is subtly and beautifully expressed.
Heart's Blood is not faultless; certain plot twists can be anticipated in advance and there is the odd flowery turn of phrase. But these small cavils aside, Heart's Blood is a multilayered, hugely readable story of hope, acceptance and bravery. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A step deeper into the shadows!, 12 Oct 2009
By Marie (North West (U.K.)) - See all my reviews
Heart's Blood is a on-the-surface somewhat creepy story of a young girl finding protection among a household of the embodied - and the disembodied! - and through her own courage, hope, and love helping them to break a generations-long family curse. In the course of this, she also regains her own true nature - lost on the death of her beloved father.

J.M.'s novels always carry a deeper thread than the surface story, so don't discount this as a "fairy tale" - there are a lot of important life messages here, which we can all learn from.

Her "undead" characters are as interesting as her "alive" ones - it isn't actually necessary to be in a body to be a fully rounded person -and in the end, all her characters face their individual fears and work together to find their peace.

An interesting story, cleverly written - give it a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!, 10 Nov 2009
What a beautiful book! Even though its based on the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, it had its own charm and originality, a separate story in a way as well. I loved everything, from the main character Caitrin, to the little doll and girl ghost! I found the magic mirrors and their attributes used quite cleverly throughout, they added such an interesting way in viewing various circumstances. I was worried at first that Anluan, the chieftain , was going to resemble some sort of animal! Thankfully Marillier has given him human form and though he has afew disabilities, i am happy to say that we have another irish hottie in this tale! I simply could not put this book down. I am a fussy reader, and i have to say that anything Juliet writes is stunning, my favourite author. Juliet, i cannot wait until your next book. Thank you for this lovely story!
