Product Description

Morris dancing is one of the more individual of English folk customs and one that has been greatly misunderstood. Seen as a descendant of pagan folk ritual, the tradition of morris dancing has been based on calendar customs and distorted by preconceptions imposed on it by the folklorists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. John Forrest has carefully analysed the wealth of evidence to show that morris dancing does not in fact have pagan or ancient origins. His examination of the early documentation traces the passage of dance ideas between groups of people who have conventionally been considered folklorically distinct and ties morris traditions into the wider area of communal customs and public celebrations. Twenty years in the making and impeccably researched with a huge treasury of source material, "A History of Morris Dancing 1458-1750" is an essential reference work for anthropologists, social historians, and specialists in English literature.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must for the devotees of dancing the Morris., 4 Jan 2002
By Mr. Christopher Cox "Chris Cox" (Salisbury, England) - See all my reviews

This book is full of useful information on the history of Morris dancing in England from the late 15th century through to the mid 18th century. It includes some details on the dance steps and movements and also some of the tunes used. The book also dispells lots of the myths surrounding the Morris and explains the details of who danced, why they danced, where they danced and when. Certainly a book for the devotee which is full of documented evidence from church records and various other archives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Morris Dancing for the Enthusiast., 20 May 2008
By J. Palmer "The Big Bear" (Devon) - See all my reviews

This is certainly the book for you if you are an enthusiast and want a comprehensive and in depth treatise on the subject. The research seems impeccable and there is more than enough to satisfy the total (bell-bedecked) anorak. It's probably not the best book to start with if you are just getting into the dancing, though. One to help pass the winter when you can't get out a-leaping!!!
