Engaging, interesting, thought-provoking, and particularly well-written. This is an academic book that's actually enjoyable and easy to read. And it deals with far more than just music; as Turino takes us from an indigenous community on the shores of Lake Titicaca to the noisy, grimy capital of Peru, he delves into the lives and relationships of the various people who connect the two settings. In doing so he really gives a feel for the complex interactions between the different layers of society and class in Peru. This is a book that has the ability to break down assumptions and give a better understanding about how people relate to one another, discrimination in Peruvian society, and what 'indigenous' identity might mean. Turino's writing really made me feel compassionate about the people that form the focus of his book. And another thing I like is the fact that Turino's happy to admit when someone else disagrees with him and when he might just be plain wrong - a rare thing with academics. This ethnography definitely deserves all the respect that it's won.
