Review

"All the elements of Welsh's best work remain in tact here: brilliant imagination, phonetically-transcribed Scots dialect, humour, gritty realism"
--Woman's Way

Product Description

In these pages you can enjoy Christmas dinner with Begbie, and see how warmly Franco greets his sister's boyfriend and the news of their engagement. You will discover, in 'The Rosewell Incident', how aliens addicted to Embassy Regal have Midlothian under surveillance, and plan to install the local casuals as the new governors of Planet Earth. You will not be surprised to read that a televised Hibs v. Hearts game might matter more to one character than the life of his wife, or that two guys fighting over a beautiful girl might agree - on reflection, and after a few pills and many pints of lager - that their friendship is actually more important. And you will be delighted to welcome back 'Juice' Terry Lawson, and to watch what happens when he meets his old nemesis, retired schoolmaster Albert Black, under the strobe-lights of a Miami Beach nightclub. Most of the stories in "Reheated Cabbage" originally appeared in fugitive form in magazines and long-out-of-print anthologies in the 1990s. Finally collected together, they show all Irvine Welsh's trademark skills - vaulting imagination, a brilliant vernacular ear, dark, scabrous humor and the ability to create some of the most memorable characters in contemporary fiction.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best of Irvine Welsh's work, 20 Jul 2009
By Campbell79 (England) - See all my reviews
Since I thoroughly enjoyed reading Filth, Glue, Porno, Crime, The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs and others by Mr Welsh, when I saw this work of previously released short stories had been merged into a book, I clicked on Add to Basket and purchased and eagerly awaited my delivery.

I delved into the book almost the second it had been delivered and boy was I disappointed.

This collection of 8 short stories is in no way a true representation of the talent Mr Welsh has for writing some truly weird and wonderful fiction (let's hope they are fiction!!!).

The first story, A Fault on the Line, starts off the book badly and the rest of the book doesn't seem to get better from then on in. Although Mr Welsh's books have to be taken with a pinch-of-salt there are some truly unbelieveable stories which are a waste of time to read.

If you haven't read any of Irvine Welsh's books then please do so, he has written some brilliant stuff; just don't start with this book as it may put you off him for good.

Sorry but it might have been best not to re-publish these stories at all!

p.s. I gave this a rating of 3 stars and published this review, if I could alter this I would only give it 2 stars - the reason for this is that if you are a fan of Welsh, you have hope that the next story will be better than the last.

4.0 out of 5 stars still barry!, 23 Jul 2009

(REAL NAME)
fair enough, far from his best work but there is still enough here to entertain fans of Welsh. In particular, xmas dinner at the Begbie's is laugh out loud funny and the the novella with Juice Terry and co is worth the price of the book alone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, 13 Aug 2009
I have read all of Irvine Welsh's books and this is certainly up there with the best of them. This is because it seems that he wrote most of the stories contained in this anthology when he was at the top of his game in the mid 90s. Some of the stories could have fitted easily into Trainspotting or the Acid House and the final excellent novella about Juice Terry seems to be a left over chapter from 'Glue', another period in his career when he was on form.

So if you liked Trainspotting, The Acid House or Glue, then this comes highly recommended.
