Product Description

Barry Forshaw, Friday Express, 7 April 2006

Roberts never forgets that his principal responsibility is to keep us hooked – and that he does with aplomb.

Daily Mail

"Suitably disturbing and unsettling, and lingers long in the mind."

5.0 out of 5 stars A multi-layered thriller, 27 Mar 2006
By Alan Garrow (Cuddesdon, OXON United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is a darkly touching book. The landscape of the novel is almost unremittingly bleak, from the murder of a young couple on the opening page until the twenty-fifth of its twenty-six chapters. The twist is entirely thought-provoking and changes the way you see the world as well as making you want to read the novel again. A story that stays with you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing and admirable, 16 Aug 2006
By A reader (Los Angeles CA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This is a well written book about a photographer who follows a series of signs (the letters of the alphabet) left by a murderer. The writing is strongest in its evocation of anonymous English towns. It keeps you hooked, but by the end I felt the characters and relationships hadn't developed enough; for a literary novel, it seemed like it had too little to say. However, I liked this novel because it was an antidote to the steroidal type of genre thriller. It felt set in the real world, though the protagonist did make a living by selling gruesome photographs to local newspapers, which struck me as hard to believe.
