5.0 out of 5 stars Most men think it; Coren writes it!, 2 Oct 2005
By Robert Ashton (www.robertashton.co.uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've long been a fan of Coren's Times column but Winkler is even better. Unrestrained and uninhibited (for readers venture here entirely at their own risk), Coren has Winkler acting out the fantasies that many must have but luckily for us all, very few actually deliver. It's the perfect Christmas present for the chap who wants everything. Don't miss it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Recommended for male readers, 15 Sep 2006
By Kevin (Devon) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Winkler (Paperback)
Great debut from Coren and a brilliantly fun read. Sometimes laugh out loud funny, sometimes poignant. The blind girl sequence is outgragous!

2.0 out of 5 stars Blam!, 27 Jun 2009
This review is from: Winkler (Paperback)
If you like the word `Blam!' then this is the book for you. Rarely have I seen the word used so many times in one novel, it really is quite astounding. Yes, there are times when it is a suitable word to capture a moment but to use it so often at crucial points in the narrative seems, quite frankly, a bit of a creative cop out.

The plot is patchy and the story just doesn't work well as a whole. The book doesn't flow very well in places; particularly in the bit containing 25 little chapters. It seems like Giles got 3/4 of the way through the book, realised not a lot had actually happened, and tried to cram the rest of the plot into that one chapter. He clearly strives to use language inventively to conjure up unconventional images by juxtaposing odd words to create unique descriptions. Sometimes this works and he brings to life a banal landscape with the perfect phrase but, more often than not, the descriptions jar because he's trying too hard. Many of the descriptive passages ramble on to such a wearying extent that you wonder whether he ever actually tried reading back through them himself.

So far this all sounds rather damning, but there were some good things about the book. The descriptions of the tedious routine of office work will chime with anyone who has ever worked in an office. Winkler finally exploding at one of his colleagues was a highlight of the book. The neurotic workings of Winkler's mind when on the underground were amusing and often fascinating.

The problem with the book is that the story just isn't convincing for much of the time. The parts of it that are well written and funny aren't quite good enough to warrant reading through the rest of the book to get to. If you're thinking of buying this novel because you like Giles' columns then perhaps you should think twice because this is about as far away from his typical newspaper fodder as you can get.
