Product Description

Product Description

A romanzo from Italian streets where the melancholy dreams of Mafiosi become nightmares. A hitman lies dying in the gray and narrow streets of Naples, a handsome new revolver by his side. Nino's father gave him that gun for his birthday. It never fired a shot. Peppino spent his life taking orders from the bosses and dodging bullets. An old man, it takes a divine intervention to save his life one more time. Peppino has lost his son, but not his faith. He puts down the fishing rods of his retirement and picks up his old pistols, looking for revenge. Shots ring out over Peppi's gray head once again as he searches for his son's murderers and the shining black gun he gave to Nino on the last night of his life. Spare, romantic, and surreal, 5 is the Perfect Number brings Italian magic realism to graphic novels in a story about heroes, families, and faith.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting and enjoyable example of the graphic novel form., 1 April 2009
I had been meaning to purchase this book for years and finally got a copy the other day. I'm really glad i did because it is an interesting and enjoyable example of the graphic novel form.

A great mafia gangster story with brilliant atmospheric film-noir style artwork. Igor Tuveri's (he signs his work Igort) style is similar to other European comics artists like fellow Italian Lorenzo Mattotti and Miguelanxo Prado (Spanish). They utilize a distinctive fine-art painting / expressionistic style to illustrate their work, rather than the clean-line style used by Jacques Tardi and Hergé etc.

This fumetto (Italian for comics) just drips with style as soon as you open the cover. The page layouts are quite varied which creates an unusual and fresh read compared to some graphic novels, no boring regimented panel-work here. Igort has a free-flowing spontaneous look to his artwork that can appear slap-dash at times but in fact has a great deal of realistic detail which really gives the story energy and integrity.

Everything about this story has the mark of a comics master at the top of his game doing what he loves best. If you enjoy Film Noir, Gangster flicks or just great hardboiled crime fiction this book is for you. Highly Recommended.
