Product Description

The Gloss

'It's a lyrical, wry, humane collection that provokes, moves and leaves you holding your breath.'

Product Description

Continuing where he left off with A Spillage of Mercury, Neil Rollinson's eagerly awaited new collection delves again into the dark, moist, unexpected bag of human experience. Taking the themes of love, sex, and life's unpredictable mysteries and excitements, he scrapes away at the veneer of normality to reveal a world that is instantly stranger and more compelling than before. Rollinson revisits the erotic with his usual wit and bravado, in poems that are sometimes playful and sensitive, sometimes visceral and shocking. He explores scientific subjects through bedroom eyes, introducing the idea of entropy to the lovers' lexicon; he makes sport a backdrop for loneliness - his characters playing golf on the moon, taking the final penalty in the shoot-out, or wandering aimlessly and forever through the high grass of the village-cricket boundary. Diverse and provocative, vibrant and accessible, Spanish Fly is an unusually happy combination: a successful stimulant and a wholly satisfying performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roll your tongue over Rollinson!!!, 19 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Never have I read sensuality so pure in form, so insistent & persistent, so tender yet so rough. Rollinson's previous book, A Spillage of Mercury was enough to make you ache and this is a very worthy follow up...Spread the word!

5.0 out of 5 stars Personal and Perfect, 26 Oct 2007

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I bought this book after going to a poetry reading where Rollinson was performing. I'd never seen or heard him before and didn't know what to expect. I immediately went out afterwards and bought this book. His voice is passionate and intensely personal, sometimes to the point where he can bring a blush to your cheek. He doesn't shy away from the erotic, but manages to blend it perfectly with humour and the pragmatic events of every day to make these poems you can connect with, that talk to you and which can be instantly meaningful. Great use of language and a real ability to write about humanity in all its grubbiness with great affection. buy this book, and if you get a chance, go and see him perform.
