Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

It's the dawn of the new millennium and most people in Liverpool are coping with a thousand-year hangover. But in the midst of the debris, two people have found something wonderful: Kelly and Victor have found each other--and after just a few hours, they can't believe they were ever apart. In this harsh city, where hard men rule and ordinary people only work in order to pay for their next weekend of oblivion, a pair of young lovers has suddenly found a new reason to live. But love proves to be a more a dangerous drug than anything they could score on the streets. Written from the dual perspective of its two doomed protagonists, Kelly and Victor might be described as a modern love story. But despite moments of great tenderness, this is no book for romantics. Niall Griffiths' distinctive brand of Mersey-dark realism--well established in the underground classics Grits and Sheepshagger--is entering uncharted territory here, laying bare the least-visited quarters of human desire. This is a powerful, often frightening tale, in which people capable of the purest acts of love are also capable of violence and fatal obsessions. We might now be well into the third millennium, but Kitty and Victor's compelling message is that the Dark Ages are far from over. --Matthew Baylis

Review

A very dark, disturbing - but also very moving - novel about sadomasochism.

5.0 out of 5 stars astonishing, intensly depressing and heart-breaking, 20 Mar 2002
By A Customer
...He is a master of language - the two phonetic monologues which make up this brutal yet moving tale of love in all its best and worst forms wash over you as you read, dragging you forward with their detail - almost as though first Victor and then Kelly have cornered you in the pub to tell you their story. The novel begins with Victor, a gentle, thoughtful lad, spotting the beautiful but confused Kelly in a pub in Liverpool while in the middle of his millennium party celebrations. He thinks she is the most beautiful girl he has even seen. Then they have sex. At the height of it, Kelly tries to strangle Victor. And he....loves it. From there the novel charts their complex, frequently heart-rending relationship as it spirals down over the next two weeks. Then Kelly tells essentially the same story from her point of view, forcing you to reassess moments and also to look at both protagionists in a different way. It is a story which I personally can't get out of my head although some readers may find parts - especially when narrated by Kelly - too terrible to read. Essentially a tale both of sado-masochism and of the purity of love I ended this novel weeping for Victor, but also more surprisingly, for Kelly. I would urge anyone who is interested in dark, satisfying fiction to buy this novel and would say Griffiths is one of the best - and most realistic - writers around right now.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that makes you think about modern love., 13 May 2005

This review is from: Kelly and Victor (Paperback)
I have a love/hate thing going on with Niall Griffiths, I loved Grits but hated Sheepshagger and Stumped. The man seemed to be a Irvine Welsh clone at some point...Then I read this book and saw him as a seperate entity.

I loved the character of lovestruck Victor, what Niall does is sum up the feelings most men have when seeing a girl they automatically want to talk to, all the paranonia and doubts about the self jump out at you when reading.

I liked the Kelly character also, she is in love with this man but struggles with past pain throughout the book.

I would recommend this book to anyone apart from my mother. Read this book and see the new worlds romantic castaways diary of a generation.
