Hollowpoint, by Rob Reuland - Tough, gritty, haunting., 23 Nov 2003
A tough, gritty and haunting story. To have to live with the knowledge that, by your own carelessness, you have indirectly caused the death of your daughter. This continues to plague every waking hour of Assistant D.A. Giobberti. Assistant D.A. Gibberti, handles the case involving a young girl, shot dead. Throughout the book, the underlying feelings of guilt, and extreme loss caused by his own carlessness, when his daughter was killed in a road accident, encroach upon the story and the reader. It stays with us on every page. Even the lines of gritty (often amusing) dialouge, the sense of Gio's guilt, and bereavment are evident. It underpins the story, and his desperate attempts to be able to come to terms with what he has done. To be able to remember his daughter knowing that it is only in memory he is going to be able to gain any consolation at all. And it is this, which enables him to reach out and to create his own resolution. The way he does this, and succeeds, to gain some redemption for himself, provided for me, an uplifting ending, to what I considered to be a clever, (different) and enjoyable read.
