Interesting revision on one of the world's oldest fables, 11 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This book is extremely enjoyable for anyone who has read the legends of Troy and wants to explore more with questions like "What if?" What if there was a story that told the legend of the Fall of Troy from the Trojan perspective? What if the mad Cassandra could be believed as a reliable storyteller, and could have her own back on Fate as the one whose prophecies were never believed? The story starts with a mature Cassandra beginning to write the story of Troy from her perspective, and from the perspective of her dead family. She has in fact survived the aftermath of the war (where Greek fable said she perished as well as the rest of her family) and begins to write the story of the House of Priam and the fateful events that surrounded them. Not only does the book deal with events surrounding Cassandra, but also describes proceedings from the other two famous women from this fable: Clytemnestra and her sister, Helen of Troy, the most beautiful woman in the world. The book re-writes the Iliad and Sophocles, not only from a Trojan perspective, but also from a woman's perspective. So we read about enduring suffering and hardship, and revel in the beauty and intelligence of the women characters, as writer, queen, prophetess and mother; not just the romantic ballad and fable of heroes. The only fault I found was that every time the story shifted sequence, transferring forward and back from Troy to Thessaly to Mycenae, the author had created such an intriguing set of events that it made me want to read on from there. This was usually at its worst in the scenes set in Thessaly; sometimes I did not want to leave Thessaly, to go back to the horrors of the war in Troy (what the whole story should really be about). On the whole, a very interesting and agreeable read - I would definitely recommend reading it.
