Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The Web Design Wow! Book is an outstanding full-colour guide teaching you how to apply design principles to the creation of on-screen interactive media--primarily Web sites and, to a lesser extent, CD-ROMs and floppy-disk presentations. The authors first provide an overview of what you need to consider when creating a Web site or any other multimedia project. They discuss production methods and teach you how to define your purpose and audience; decide on your project's organisation, content and navigation; and assemble, test and market your final product. Next they delineate the various interface elements you need to consider, such as buttons, backgrounds, typography, animation, images, video and audio, and they discuss the trends in each area, such as the decreasing popularity of beveled buttons and the increasing popularity of 3-D graphics, interactive help and user feedback. The following chapter is devoted to teaching you five basic tenets of good design, including clarity, consistency and contrast. The following chapters show you successful Web sites and CD-ROMs in the areas of marketing, entertainment, education and training, publishing, portfolios and presentations, and sales. These case studies show ample graphical elements along with explanations of why certain approaches work and others do not.

There's very little emphasis on the tools you need to accomplish the design of your site or CD-ROM. But, where such information is relevant, the authors mention the Windows and Macintosh products designers used to create a special graphic or effect, or products frequently used in general, such as Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Flash. Unlike other books in the Wow! series, the focus here is not on software how-to tips but on design tips, so just about anyone--whether beginning designer, creative director, production manager or marketing professional, for example--can learn what's important in planning, designing, finalising and updating good sites and CDs. The included hybrid CD-ROM comes with demonstration versions of WYSIWYG and standard HTML editors and full versions of Netscape Communicator 4, Internet Explorer 4, Shockwave and Flash, RealPlayer, as well as GIF-viewers and other Web utilities. --Kathleen Caster

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for picking up tips and ideas!, 10 Mar 2000
By A Customer
This book was the most inspiring book I have seen on giving me ideas for designing web pages. Although it doesn't actually teach you any HTML or Javascript, it focuses more on interface design itself which a lot of other books don't. For each web page illustration you see, the web address is included so you can visit the actual site which helps. A great book, I found, as it gave me a whole wider range of fresh ideas for designing interfaces. As a student studying web design, this book is very inspiring and one that I could look at over and over again. Well worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Should be the 'interface-design wow-book', 13 Aug 2000

(REAL NAME)
Half the pieces used as illustrations here are from CD-rom based productions, with great big video screens, zooming bitmaps etc. Don't get me wrong - the examples are great and relevant to the work I do - just don't try to base any web-sites around these ideas for the next couple of years!

Text is a bit fatuous, and the CD goes straight in the bin (dreamweaver1! ), but as a screen-based design source book, it's just fine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book for designers...very inspiring!, 28 April 2000
By A Customer
This book is very inspiring with loads of ideas that could be applied to your own projects. As it showcases some very impressive sites, it fires the reader's enthusiasm to produce similar stunning work.

There a few points to bare in mind before purchasing this book:- As this book mostly covers the 'design' aspect of websites, you will find little or no technical information.

If you're designing websites for a market that is still using IE3 at 600x480 with a slow connection - leave this book well alone. On the other hand, if you are designing for a market that has JavaScript enabled browsers, Shockwave, 33k to 56k connection, P133 or higher - Then this book will inspire your socks off!

Beginners should make themselves aware of the limitations of the web. Find out what you can and can't do! Once you have this knowledge you can read this book and apply your new inspired ideas within these limitations.

Overall - this book has given me some great ideas. Trouble is knowing where to start with them all. The advise and guidelines on interfaces, layout and interaction was very enlightening. The best thing about this book it that it's full of different examples. This alone sparks inspiration... When you get that designers block where your thoughts grind to a halt - pick up this book and it'll get you flying again!
