Product Description
Behind the hoopla and hype surrounding the release of Windows 95, there's one unavoidable reality: almost everybody's frustrated in one way or another with Microsoft's new operating system - its performance, its interface, its incompatibilities. This book is the ultimate problem-solving guide for making the most of this challenging situation. The book shows you ways to get around the worst problems, better ways of doing certain tasks, what you can and can't do in real-life situations, and where to turn for more help. You'll learn what Microsoft left out and what they don't tell you, how to keep the good parts of Windows 3.1, and what to do about hardware and software incompatibilities.

From the Author
I had a lot of fun writing this book.
The cover art pictured here doesn't reflect the final cover, and maybe the title is a little overkill, but what we really created is a useful guide for getting Windows 95 running smoothly, showing you a few behind-the-scenes tricks. Originally it was to be titled "Windows 95 Sucks," which book buyers loved, but the rest of us feared the wrath of Microsoft. I chickened out at the last minute and so did the publisher. But we left all the jokes in! Seriously, it's not Microsoft-bashing, just a lot of (IMHO) useful information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fixed 3 problems the first afternoon. Well worth the money., 8 Feb 1997
By A Customer
As a newby to Windows, I blindly used Windows 95 as I learned about the Windows platform. As the weeks passed, so did the quality of the performance of my programs. My CD-ROM was no longer available, my desk top lost things around the edges, and then when I tried to load a free software package from an Internet Service Provider, and had to abort the load, I lost 8 drivers and the platform no longer wanted to load. It was clearly time to stop putting up with this deterioration and start fixing things. A couple of guru's were of no help with the ROM so I took the advice of one and bought this book. I am now well on my way to total recovery and am deeply grateful to Kay Nelson for taking the time to write all of this down for those of us that flounder when encountering the Great God, Windows 95, Ruler of My PC, whether I like it or not. I now feel that I am starting to regain my rightful control of my computer, for the first time in about 8 weeks. I am not used to an operating system that tells me I am not allowed to load things into my computer, even if it is probably good advice. And I will have trouble adjusting to the new world of missing and modified DOS commands. And with Kay's help, I may soon be able to guess where my old and friendly app's programs might have put the file we just created. Yes, Windows 95 has truly been driving me crazy for about 8 weeks, but I am now feeling better, since help has arrived.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great resource for folks moving to Windows 95, 14 Nov 1996
By A Customer

As a new user of Windows 95 (but veteran Windows 3.x user), I was looking for a book that would help me appreciate how it works--but I didn't need hand-holding. None impressed me, so I started using the product anyway. I was immediately struck by several unintuitive and challenging quirks. I also started to see work-arounds that left me wondering why the designers hadn't thought of the same things I had (like default "send to" entries for the Start menu and Desktop). Anyway, I then happened upon this book and felt an immediate rush of comfort and solace, reading of another's similar discoveries and shared solutions. Being confident that I'd barely scratched the surface of such challenges, and wanting to be able to solve them quickly when I did encounter them, I bought this book. I'm happy I did. If you're a Windows 3.x, Mac, or OS/2 user converting to Windows 95, I think you'll find it very helpful too!
