Product Description

Product Description

The first book to comprehensively cover the new object-oriented generation of SAP's programming language ABAP. Officially-approved guide and reference to a core SAP topic

From the Publisher

ABAP (Advanced Business Application Programming) is a powerful programming language created specifically for developing SAP applications. ABAP Objects is the new object-oriented generation of this language, designed to respond to the needs of SAP's future strategies and environments.

Written by two leading experts and approved by SAP's ABAP Language Group, ABAP Objects provides an in-depth and comprehensive introduction to SAP application programming for Release 4.6. The focus is on ABAP Objects, which is treated here not as an add-on, but as an integral part of the ABAP language.
An indispensable guide for novice and experienced programmers alike, ABAP Objects includes coverage of these essential topics:

The new ABAP Workbench and the most important features of the ABAP language.
The fundamentals of ABAP programming, including the ABAP runtime environment.
The core ABAP language elements.
The two ABAP programming models - classical and object-oriented - and their relevant statements.
Advanced concepts of OO programming with ABAP Objects.
Programming the SAP user interface.
Database access with OpenSQL.
ABAP glossary and a complete list of system fields.

The book also includes two CDs carrying a fully-operational SAP Basis System, which contains all the example programs from the book. The examples can also be found the publisher's website, along with a FAQ for the CDs.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pretty good in ABAP plus detailed coverage of oo features, 5 Nov 2002
This is a book straight out of SAP-Walldorf - and it comprehensively covers all of ABAP - with about half the book on the object oriented extensions. The language used is a bit awkward - and seems to have been translated from the original deutsch - but its still very understandable - if not a bit long winded. Having been coding ABAP for 10 years or so - I have developed some bad habits - and so I found reading the non object oriented sections pretty useful too. The info describing the way abap is processed is interesting as well - plus the object oriented part is a good starting point and also fairly comprehensive. Good coverage of dialog programming integrated with the new object oriented features too.
The mini-basis system on the cd's is just superb - and I have it installed on my laptop a full blown development environment- contains most basis SAP transactions, all abap transactions and most EDI and workflow - the book is definitely worth buying just for this alone. The only irritation being that you have to keep renewing the license with SAP - but they say its free to do this - just you have to visit their website every month - a bit of hassle - but well worthwhile.
Overall I think this is the best book on ABAP available - most of the others are looking pretty dated - this one and the one on control frameworks - that seems to be only available from the SAP shop - are the ones for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good and Useful Book for SAP Application Development, 14 Sep 2002
By A Customer
This book is the best book about ABAP. A well defined and structured contents with a simple approach which is used to explain the new ABAP Objects concept. But there is a need of prior knowledge of SAP and ABAP terminology for better understanding. The CDs contain almost all the major SAP Module which may be utilised for overall working knowledge and thorough practise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Introduction, 3 Jan 2005
As a SAP user I wanted to learn more about the development side. If you can already program but are new to ABAP this is an ideal starting point as it is shipped with a mini basis system. The basis system is excellent, extremely impressed. It should be noted that if all you want is the basis system, it is available for download. Changing the pc date on installation of the basis system negates the need to re-register, or at least it did at the time I installed it.
The book itself is clear and very informative, personally I would have preferred more code as opposed to some of the high level explanations. That said, there is enough code to keep you occupied for some time.
A bit expensive, but an excellent way to gain access to this technology.
One more point, installing the basis system significantly slowed the startup of my pc, luckily I installed it on a seperate partition, would recomend doing this as the delay would be real nuisance otherwise.
