Product Description

Product Description

With CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration), top software quality experts have gone far beyond the successful CMM, codifying every aspect of model-based process improvement in one integrated framework. This concise, authoritative guide has three goals: to help understand the benefits of an integrated approach to process improvement; to introduce the CMMI project's new tools for multi-discipline process improvement; and to provide practical guidance in selecting and using these tools. The authors begin by identifying key shortcomings of traditional process improvement in 21st century environments that involve more people and organizations, must be delivered more quickly, and utilize the latest innovations. Next, they introduce the new CMMI standard, showing how it overcomes these limitations, adding substantial quality and value in development, systems engineering, acquisition, and other key areas. Finally, the authors walk through the process of implementing and using CMMI, presenting lessons learned by pioneers in integrated process improvement.

From the Back Cover

The original Capability Maturity Model® (CMM®) framework has been widely adopted to support software process improvement. Its success has led to the development of similar models for process improvement in other areas: systems engineering, acquisition, and human resources, among others. However, the existence of multiple process improvement models within the same organization can lead to conflict and confusion. The Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) project, spearheaded by industry, government, and the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon, aims to alleviate these difficulties. It supplies a single, integrated framework for improving various processes throughout an organization, thereby enhancing the quality and efficiency of the organization as a whole.

CMMI

® Distilled

offers executives, project managers, systems and software engineers, and process improvement practitioners a concise, authoritative, and experience-rich introduction to the CMMI framework. The book first explains key aspects of integrated process improvement. Brief case studies highlight the experiences of organizations that have pioneered integrated process improvement and reveal potential pitfalls as well as best practices. It then describes the structure and content of CMMI tools and offers concrete, practical implementation guidelines.

Specific topics covered include:

  • The benefits of integrated process improvement
  • Migration from legacy process improvement activities to the CMMI framework
  • The initial CMMI disciplines: systems engineering, software engineering, and integrated product and process development
  • The proposed CMMI extension for acquisition
  • Staged and continuous CMMI model representations
  • Choosing the most appropriate models for your organization
  • Customizing CMMI products for a specific organization
  • The rationale behind certain CMMI design decisions
  • The initial approach to assessments in CMMI
  • Likely future developments within the CMMI project

The CMMI models are large and complex products. CMMI® Distilled provides a concise introduction to help you understand the CMMI framework, evaluate it, and take the first steps toward integrated process improvement.

2.0 out of 5 stars CMMI is what?, 28 Sep 2006
By M. Stutchbury (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've been consulting in process improvement for 12 years. I've worked with dozens of organisations that follow the principles of the CMM.

After reading the book once I was stumped. So I read it again and I was even more confused. The book talks a lot about the history of CMMI - the founding CMM from engineering, software development etc. but doesn't tell you anything about them specifically - what makes them different.

More importantly, it didn't discuss CMMI in any detail or how to go about using it in any practical situation.

I for one was very disappointed in the book and felt compelled to write a review about it - the first time I've done so after buying and reading 50+ books based on reader recommendations.

In short, the book is poorly organised, provides a brief history of CMM/CMMI but doesn't provide any details or practical examples of how to use it, when to use it or where to use it.

1.0 out of 5 stars One of the most tedious books I've read, 26 Mar 2009
By N. P. Stanford (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this book in order to learn about a methodology that is going to be implemented in my workplace. The book didn't help in the slightest. It covers a load of history of CMMI, how it evolved, and then turned into a dictionary of acronyms that imparted no wisdom or useful information whatsoever.

It was clearly written to be easy to write, not to be easy to read.

I would recommend Cmmi: Guidelines for Process Integration and Product Improvement (Sei Series in Software Engineering) instead. It contains information and guidance.
