Product Description
Synopsis
According to postings on newsgroups and articles in design magazines, there is a growing interest in using the computer as a craft tool. This interest extends beyond the scope of holiday projects and "Print Shop"-produced newsletters and brochures. The Arts and Crafts Computer: Using Your Computer as an Artist's Tool is an all-in-one reference that covers every base for the audience of designers, artists, crafters and hobbyists. The first section covers craft source materials and tools needed, explains digital tools, and provides resources for arts and crafts output supplies. The second section covers scanning, image editing, and typesetting skills. And the third section presents techniques and projects that combine printed computer output with traditional media and tools. Whether you are a designer or professional who needs to get your creative juices flowing again, or a hobbyist making your entry into the digital world, The Arts and Crafts Computer provides the spark for your creativity.

From the Back Cover
Were getting craftier--and were turning to our computers for help. The Arts and Crafts Computer recognizes that theres more to computer-assisted crafting than holiday newsletters and cards. No other book better covers the range of technologies--ink-jet printers, scanners, digital cameras, etc.--and the breadth of possibilities they offer aspiring and professional artists alike. The Arts and Crafts Computer is organized around three key sections. The first covers craft materials and tools--including digital ones--and lists resources for supplies. The second section imparts scanning, image editing, and typesetting skills. In the final section, youll find inspiration and instruction--full-color techniques and projects that combine printed computer output with traditional media and tools to create mixed-media collages, family memorabilia, stationery, gift wrap and boxes, games, toys, and more. For design professionals who use computers for work, The Arts and Crafts Computer brings back the joys of working by hand. For crafters with little computer experience, these projects provide an easy entry into the digital world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Janet Ashford's very own Arts and Crafts Movement!, 7 Nov 2001
I teach and write about digital art and computing, and have to read a lot for my work. Janet Ashford's books always stand out because of the quality of the writing, the beauty of the illustrations, and the crispness of the editing. This author has a wonderful gift - that of making complex ideas simple, and reducing so-called expert tasks to the few steps guaranteed to yield great results for everyone, regardless of skill level.

If you are already using your computer to make art and craft items, you will find real inspiration on every page and soon come to rely on the technical aide memoires within, including the comprehensive lists of art materials and their stockists. If you have never used your computer in this way, or have only dabbled, you'll wonder what's been keeping you. Ashford's selection of crafts is broad, appropriate, and impressive. She'll show you how to make some exceptionally cool things - stationery, leaflets, boxes, gift bags, and enchanting games, among many others. You'll love making them, people will admire them, and others will love to receive them as gifts.

How ironic that the computer, that icon of mass-production, should present such an easy way to achieve individualism in all areas of learning and living. Janet Ashford is fascinating on this subject, too. Her blissful, intelligent chapter on using your computer as a propaganda machine was my personal favourite.

This is a superb companion to her previous book with John Odham, "Start with a Scan".
