Truly a hands-on guide, Flash 5 Hands On Training is a Flash tutorial that takes you from basic drawing and animation through to building interactive movies with buttons and ActionScript. Macromedia's popular authoring tool for embedding multimedia movies into Web pages is powerful, but not especially easy to use. This title steers you through the complexity by providing step-by-step examples, illustrated with screenshots and diagrams. In addition, the enclosed CD includes movies that talk you through many of the exercises. Clear introductions, spacious page layout, and panelled tips and warnings all play a part in easing the learning process. A typical chapter includes around eight short exercises.

After a brief introduction to Flash, the early chapters concentrate on basics including the interface, the colour tools, drawing and animation. Shape Tweening, which lets you generate in-between graphics to transform one shape into another, gets a chapter to itself, as does Motion Tweening. Other chapters cover symbols and instances, text and fonts, bitmaps, buttons, and movie clips. There is a detailed look at ActionScript, a chapter on the publishing process, and another covering integration with Fireworks, FreeHand and Dreamweaver. Finally, there is a chapter on the big picture, analysing atypical Flash Web site to show how the various pieces fit together.

I have already read the Dreamweaver and Photoshop/Imageready books in the H.O.T series and was very impressed. I was ready to learn Flash but too impatient to wait for the H.O.T. Flash 5 book to be published. Big mistake! I wasted my money on a book that sold itself as 'written for designers by designers'. Never again. The H.O.T. books are written by teachers for anyone eager to learn, including designers like myself. The first Flash book I bought helped you build an animation in chapter one, I spent the next couple of chapters confused and bored while the author tried explain how the animation had been made. It sounds so obvious but the H.O.T. books start at the beginning with the basics and build you up, straight away you look forward to what you will learn in the next chapter. After finishing Flash 5 H.O.T. I am ready to create my first Flash website full of inspiration and confidence. If only they made books for other programmes such as Director I could buy computer books with the knowledge that I am not wasting my time and money. To anyone that has read the H.O.T. books before and are worried that this is not written by Lynda Weinman herself, I was happy to find that this book is just as concise and well informed.

I wasn't sure whether to get this book. I've always known that the best way to learn is though experience, and from the description this was the closest i'd get to sitting in a room with the two authors for a personal lesson.

You'll be glad to know that the approach is exactly the same as if they were talking, well presented, and very easy to follow.

They've bundled loads of examples and help movies with the book on a CD ROM along with a 30-day trial version of flash, so you have plenty of time to get through the book!

Honestly, I bought this book and it's worth every penny. The presentation, approach, examples and communication are perfect, and you'll be well on your way to becoming one hell of a Flash 5 user - just like me, and i've done it all in about 2 weeks!
