Amazon.co.uk Review
A large part of successful Web design is about getting the images right and
Adobe Photoshop 6 Web Design is the most authoritative book on this one aspect of Web production you're likely to find.
While it focuses on Photoshop, ImageReady and GoLive there's a great deal of general information on aspects such as optimisation and compression that's not application specific. It also contains sound advice on other parts of the process from design concepts to HTML techniques.
Michael Baumgardt knows his stuff when it comes to the technical side of preparing images for the Web and gets it across in a clear and simple style without sacrificing accuracy or compromising on detail.
Discussions of file formats usually mention the relative advantages of gif, jpg and png and leave it at that. Baumgardt looks in depth at how colour lookup tables and LZW compression work using example images to test the theory. This is presented in a thoroughly digestible format so that even the less technically inclined will come away having learnt something of practical value.
The bulk of the book is devoted to discussing the practical aspects of Web design and production along with tutorial sessions. Baumgardt's knowledge and experience demonstrate the best approach to a wide range of techniques from colour correction and image optimisation to gif animation.
For print designers who want to cross over into Web design and for those needing a firm grasp of the principles and practice of graphic design for the Web, this is an ideal guide. --Ken McMahon
