4.0 out of 5 stars Basic compilation of web resources, 20 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This book covers the basics of penetration testing. A tried and proven methdology is explained. Nothing new here - the basic steps of footprinting, enumeration, gaining access, escalating privileges , wreak havoc, cover tracks and leave is covered.

Tools and techniques are discussed but not in granular detail.

Overall it's a decent book - but the Hacking Exposed series covers tools and techniques in much more detail. This book barely scratches the surface and for the true enthusiast there is no better resource than the web itself to explore the various tools and techniques used for penetration testing.

The various exploits changes on daily basis on no book can stay up to date at the pace the hacks are evolving.

So use books such as Hack I.T. as a quick reference to get started and use web references to get the real juice.

Remember to respect the ethics of the web when experimenting with the tools and techniques discussed. Only try this on your own network or when you have explicit permission from the "victim".
