5.0 out of 5 stars Are you a beginner? This book can do it all, 30 April 2001

I have searched long and hard for a book that could teach me the basics of the Java language. I must admit that this is just that book. It starts off giving you necessary skills to get started straight away, as well as giving you an easy-read concepts to Object Oriented Programming. Each section is described with reference to an example, and it always give you a summary at the end. The book is relatively slim, tackling the fundamental concepts and not including a lot of gibberish. Definitely recommended as a starting point for all new Java developers.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Java Tutorial - 3rd Edition, 2 Jan 2003
By Europhile "Des" (Newbury, England) - See all my reviews
This is the one to learn the basics of Java. Previously I have tried Ivor Hortons 'Beginning Java 2' - not for the beginner, but now it makes sense. Also I had tried Java2 by Example (QUE books) again not really for the beginner. These Sun tutorials are excellent and get you from 'Hello world' to reasonable programming easily. You are then in a better position to get to grips with the other Java books. Even with this book, it helps if you have done programming even in a procedural language (Clipper was my start point)

When studying Java, the most important things are:
(i) an up-to-date text. Java is still evolving. Your book should cover an up-to-date release.
(ii) consisteny. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for the novice or beginner as stated
The principles are explained quite well in the book, however, the exercises/programming bits at the end of the chapter don't build upon what has been taught in the chapter. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor introduction text
I found this book poorly laid out and the example programs, of which there are few, often include material which has not yet been covered and therefor are difficult to follow. Read more
